st. nikolai – redefining the boundaries
monumental church plateau, pavilion / hamburg, germany / competition 2025 / collaboration with Studio PaRK
The destroyed church lost not only its historical axis but also the clear boundary between interior and exterior spaces. This project reinterprets that boundary: the lost axes are reestablished to renew the spatial and conceptual connection between the city and the memorial site. The formerly rigid green frame, once perceived as a barrier, is transformed into an organic, flowing structure that gently guides visitors from the public urban realm into the interior of the ruin, allowing them to experience the transition and the historical depth of the place step by step.
The architecture deliberately avoids a literal reconstruction. Instead, a transparent glass wall reveals the absence of the original substance, making the traces of the past visible. Wood and recycled copper add a new material layer that enters into dialogue with history. Through this interplay, physical and visual boundaries begin to dissolve, turning the site into an open space of remembrance where past and present intersect and enrich one another.
